Seattle City Council Overrides Mayor’s Vetos

On the evening of September 22nd, 2020, the Seattle City Council met to review the budget vetos, which included defunding some of the Seattle Police Department. Dozens of Seattle residents called in to the meeting to voice their support for prioritizing investments in community over investments in policing. Only Councilmember Juarez and Councilmember Pederson voted against the override leaving the result at 7-2. Every councilmember commented on their vote, except Councilmember Juarez.

All of the mayor’s vetos were overturned. These caused an uproar among activists who viewed it as an attempt to thwart the Black Lives Matter movement to reimagine policing and the budget priorities. The mayor said her vetos were to create more collaboration.
