On April 23rd, 2021, Sojin Thompson announced his candidacy for Renton City Council Position 6, currently held by Councilmember Ruth Pérez. Mr. Thompson was born in Daegu, South Korea and has called Renton home all his life according to his website. Sojin has served with the Renton School District Construction Advisory Committee, Renton Schools Foundation, and the Renton Parks Commission. Sojin Thompson would be the first openly gay councilmember if elected.
Councilmember Pérez was first appointed to fill a vacancy in 2014 then elected for retention in 2015, and re-elected again in 2017. She is the first Latina elected to the council. The city website remarks she has served on every committee in the administration. Randy Corman and Ruth Pérez announced their campaigns together on Facebook on February 28th for Position 1 and Position 6 respectively. At the time of publishing no campaign website or online presence could be found for Pérez’s campaign.
No other candidates have announced for this position. Without additional challengers, the voters will determine the race in the general elections, unlike Position 2 (which has three candidates announced so far and will include a primary). Position 1 also appears likely to be a general race between Randy Corman and Joe Todd. Candidates have until May 21st to register with the King County Elections.
